Skye Warren does not disappoint with The Pawn, in fact she makes me want to reach for the next book or any one of her books. In this story we have two strong characters that seem to be in a game or dance of who's going to make the next move.
Avery James returns home from college after her father is left beaten and bedridden, the one man she believed in who handed her the world lost everything, leaving them in debt. Avery finds that she will soon lose her home and believes the only way to save something that is a part of her family is to take a deal that could break her. She is a strong character but finds herself falling for a man that at times seems like he will help her but could also destroy everything she has left.
Gabriel Miller is powerful, sexy and dangerous and may be the only person to help Avery, but will his moments of kindness lead to confusion. I found myself drawn to him, he has a inner turmoil that leaves me questioning his motives.
Warren brings you into a story of high society, the dark underground of powerful men and what could happen when you lose it all. It's a page turner and an end that I didn't see coming, it was a moment for me that I took a deep breath and had a moment of love/hate for the author. The Pawn is sexy, dark and intense, you will wish you had the next book in your hands. 5 Stars
